ROLE: Opportunist  

FUNCTION: [limited] 

OVERVIEW: ROOKS are a simple tool used by RUNNERS to pick at the edges of danger as they explore ZONES without the support of a crew or the advanced ABILITIES available in a SHELL. Despite their technological limitations, ROOKS offer a favorable risk/reward proposition for RUNNERS willing to enter a ZONE with limited utility. They are specific to solo insertions into hostile ZONES populated by RUNNER CREWS, so it's best to move with caution, either avoiding conflict as possible or taking advantage of its distractions to loot or pounce on unsuspecting/wounded targets.

    • SIGNAL MASK 

HISTORY: A ROOK frame is a scavenger's best friend. These base robotic frames are typically utilized by the UESC and various corporations for manual and heavy labor. RUNNERS have taken to augmenting these simple frames to house a limited-use neural sync adapter allowing the RUNNER to inhabit the ROOK for short periods without too much mental degradation. Because they are not SHELLS, each ROOK has only a small set of kit-bashed ABILITIES and fully lack the functionality to be upgraded via IMPLANTS and CORES. Though some variety of standard system upgrading can be achieved, a ROOK will never match the full complement of ABILITIES, comfort, and general utility inherent in more advanced bio-cybernetic SHELLS.

ROOK FRAME TACTICAL ABILITY: SIGNAL MASK

OVERVIEW: A major benefit of a ROOK's limited functionality is that its non-bio/non-synthetic systems allow it to hide in plain sight from the UESC's Autonomous Robotic Soldiers. The frame's hacked SIGNAL MASK ability tricks UESC ARS perception systems so they register the ROOK as one of their own for a brief period, or until you open fire. 

OPERATION: 

   • Activate SIGNAL MASK 

   • WAIT a second for it to activate 

   • MOVE freely amongst metal death merchants 

   • DON'T dwell 

        • The MASK only lasts so long 

HISTORY: ROOK's SIGNAL MASK is relatively new. Pure back-channel RUNNER tech hacked together somewhere in orbit above TAU CETI in response to the UESC's mobile war crimes. No one knows who coded it. The specs just dropped into a local backchannel and spread like wildfire amongst the earliest in-system trespassers.

ROOK FRAME PRIME ABILITY: RECUPERATION

OVERVIEW: If survival is the universal objective of most runs, then a ROOK's RECUPERATION mechanic is a true lifesaver. By triggering its emergency repair system, a ROOK can slowly fix damage to itself, allowing a RUNNER in its frame to survive hostile encounters for extended scavenging on TAU CETI IV. 

OPERATION: 

   • Trigger RECUPERATION 

   • Give yourself time to HEAL 

   • Continue RUNNING/FIGHTING/HIDING 

HISTORY: Most base frames have emergency repair systems built-in at the factory to provide purchasers with the comfort of continued use/function after workplace mishaps. The typical owners of ROOK-style frames are large corporations buying in bulk for industrial use. Of course, bulk purchases by multi-national businesses also make for convenient points of acquisition [read: theft] for RUNNERS. The fact that ROOKS have become a standard tool for RUNNER operations is a surprise to no one.
