DIRE MARSH REGION: ALGAE PONDS

LOCATION: South Central Marsh 

ROLE: Controlled algae and protein research facility focused on Tau Ceti-native specimens, edibility and sustainability. 

OVERVIEW: ALGAE PONDS's goal was the discovery or creation of a food source from native sources to supplement and eventually replace Sol-based reserves. Shallow grow ponds, research labs and dedicated storage/control units make up the majority of the facilities.  

The REGION's central location and raised platform provide a strategic vantage for RUNNERS either on the hunt for rival targets or simply looking to scout nearby REGIONS for threats to avoid.

DIRE MARSH REGION: BIO-RESEARCH

LOCATION: Northeast Marsh 

ROLE: Research and development dedicated to the study of Tau Ceti IV's native plant life and its potential for pharmaceutical use / breakthroughs. 

OVERVIEW: It's still too early in the rediscovery of NEW CASCADIA to grasp the full intentions or ramifications of the work done at DIRE MARSH's BIO-RESEARCH labs. Incubation tubs, biocycling outstations, hazmat requirements and mandatory delousing protocols all speak to the advanced but delicate nature of the work done here.  

The scientists who ran these facilities put theoretical medical research into practice. Even surface-level consideration of the active study of alien flora's potential for pharma-applications in human subjects raises a combination of awe and concern. In a colony of only 30,000+ people, each individual is important to the daily function and long-term survival of the endeavor. Begging the questions, where and how were the new medicines proposed here tested safely, and how were colonists chosen to participate?

DIRE MARSH REGION: COMPLEX

LOCATION: East Marsh 

ROLE: The DIRE MARSH's Research and Sustainability COMPLEX served as the ZONE's agricultural operations command center. 

OVERVIEW: The massive structure looms over DIRE MARSH's eastern edge. Its upper floors are sealed, but its ground level loading wings and landing pad suggest the ZONE provided a steady flow of food science exports to the larger colony. How and when those exports were affected by either the ANOMALY or local QUARANTINE concerns remains a mystery.

DIRE MARSH REGION: GREENHOUSE

LOCATION: North Central Marsh 

ROLE: The Greenhouse facilities' focus appears to be on the practical application of plant growth studies conducted in other REGIONS. 

OVERVIEW: The work related to delicate seed nurturing done in the GREENHOUSE grow labs served as the foundation for dissemination of seed production in similar greenhouse locations across the colony. Once a seed-type's care package [soil pH, moisture/feeding/sunlight requirements, etc.] was mapped, it was marked for active growth deployment at food center grow sites closer to the colony's central living spaces. 

There can be an eerie comfort to GREENHOUSE's seemingly unfettered operation. The lush grow beds and vibrant central rose garden give the illusion of a fully functional REGION, despite its systems being run via automation.

DIRE MARSH REGION: MAINTENANCE

LOCATION: Southwest Marsh 

ROLE: MAINTENANCE hub for the ZONE's fleet of field-operations vehicles—harvesters, threshers, drones—that work the fields stretching beyond the ZONE's borders.  

OVERVIEW: The main hangar structure houses service bays for the automated heavy field machinery that worked the fields. The exterior wings are charging and refill stations. The second-level diagnostics and command operations facilities monitored all vehicles in service to maintain a scheduled rotation for each harvest. 

The REGION itself appears maintained but inoperable.

DIRE MARSH REGION: QUARANTINE

LOCATION: West Marsh 

ROLE: Contagion consequence mitigation complete with isolation pods and diagnostic labs.  

OVERVIEW: The fact a full-scale QUARANTINE containment tent with rows of isolation booths was erected in immediate proximity to one of the colony's dedicated food science research and grow ZONES makes it hard not to speculate about causes and effects and the eventual end fate of everyone connected with this ZONE. Theories and rumors won't provide answers, and the UESC's efforts to defend this REGION and ZONE only heighten the connection between the mysteries of whatever contagion they feared enough to trigger emergency containment protocols. 

Deployment of a temp QUARANTINE site alone suggests a dire need to address the contagion. The state of the facility—beyond abandonment—says whatever bad days happened here were a threat the colony took deadly serious. 

REMARK: The state of QUARANTINE raises more questions than its presence answers. And the history of high-attach viral spreads across Sol [the Red Sands Outbreak; the Neo-Tranquility Derma-Meltation; the Syrrl-93] paint a grim picture if a plague-level sickness hit the colony.

DIRE MARSH REGION: AI UPLINK

LOCATION: Southeast Marsh 

ROLE: An AI UPLINK is a data/communication facility designed to securely connect a ZONE's dedicated advanced support intelligence with the rest of the colony as well as the UESC MARATHON. It also functions as a back-up system for the local AI, complete with dedicated servers and power supply. 

OVERVIEW: Signs of limited power/operational functionality point to DIRE MARSH's AI UPLINK being vacated. Where the ZONE's representative AI is now or why it was relocated may be tied to this REGION's proximity to THE ANOMALY. Though, like most things in the early days of TAU CETI exploration, surface-level observation leads to more questions than answers.
